The completion of eight houses in ten months is a testament of teamwork, which is what Habitat for Humanity is all about.
Volunteer construction team members work along with the Habitat partner families who will reside in the houses being built.
“Habitat partner families must provide 250 hours of their own ‘sweat equity,’ which usually takes over a year to fulfill,” said Stephanie Harris of Habitat for Humanity’s Build It Again Center.
Normally, it takes a year and a half to complete a house – from planning to building.
During the Ohio State Fair, the Habitat crew constructed a house on the OSU campus and moved it to a Summit Street location.
The latest Habitat project includes eight houses that were recently completed on the Hilltop, Columbus’ west side. Families will be able to move into the homes in time to celebrate Christmas in a new setting.
Adopt-A-House partners, companies and civic groups that provide resources as needed to build homes, make the construction of homes possible.
“Our long-time supporters, new volunteers and all of our sponsors have provided unprecedented support for the simultaneous construction and completion of these eight homes,” said E.J. Thomas, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Greater Columbus.
The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard housing and to provide safe and affordable housing.
According to Thomas, in 2005, the Habitat affiliate has constructed nine additional houses.
