Phil Harmon wants to free the people.
Harmon, an attorney in the city of Columbus for 20 years who is running for city council, plans to focus on four main issues to achieve his goals.
“The biggest problem I’ve got with City Council is that almost every piece of legislation they look at tries to restrict people rather than free people,” Harmon told the Columbus Post. “I’m trying to protect people’s rights. I’m standing up for people rather than government.”
Harmon graduated from Upper Arlington High School and attained a law degree from Capital University. He is married with one stepson.
Harmon’s first goal is to implement district representation to elect members of city council.
“District representation would allow people of diverse points of view to come together and be a true legislative body,” he said. “We have different personalities in different parts of town, and those people need to be represented.”
Harmon points to the now-defunct CMACAO as a casualty of not having district representation.
“Corruption and neglect by city leaders led to the downfall of CMACAO,” Harmon stated. “One of our most important organizations in the city just crumbled before their eyes, and no one was held responsible.”
Harmon wants to increase the safety on the streets of Columbus and curb gang violence. He plans to enact his own version of Project Exile, a joint effort by the city, county and federal prosecutors in Richmond, Va. to crack down on gang violence. Crimes that involve firearms would be prosecuted under felony statutes, meaning no plea bargains would be allowed and those convicted would be required to serve time in federal prison.
