Assistant Minority Leader Joyce Beatty (D-Columbus) has introduced legislation to designate December 1 as “Rosa Parks Day” in the state of Ohio. Parks died on October 24, 2005 at the age of 92.
Parks, who refused to give up her seat to a white man on December 1, 1955, sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
The bill to recognize Parks’ contributions to the Civil Rights Movement was read on the House floor on Tuesday.
“Once read, it is assigned a number and we are going to ask that the bill be fast-tracked,” said Beatty. “There are so many Republicans and Democrats backing it, I believe that the Speaker is going to do the right thing and immediately push the legislation through. We hope that we can get it approved before the end of the year.”
