Having worked as an aide to politicians and as an educator in various public school systems, W. Carlton Weddington hopes to combine his experience and serve as a school board member for Columbus Public Schools.
The Hampton University graduate was born and raised in Columbus and graduated from Westerville North High School. His work in the community has garnered him endorsements from former school board member and current Franklin County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy, and State Representatives Joyce Beatty and Mike Mitchell as well as other public figures and organizations.
During his career, Weddington has served as a staff member on John Glenn’s reelection campaign, a Near East Area District I commissioner and long-time substitute staff member in Columbus Public Schools, including East Pilgrim Elementary, Champion Middle and Duxberry Park Alternative Middle Schools.
Although he taught in school systems in other states, it was the work of the late Columbus School Board members Loretta Heard and Bill Moss that inspired Weddington the most.
“I saw the great need for a person who is involved in education to speak the will of the community and continue to strive for equality in education to point out inadequacies as it relates to education…for all of the students,” said Weddington.
As a school board member, Weddington plans to ask the tough questions in order to address the district’s shortcomings. He is confident that his ability to get to the root of the problem will help him create policies that are aimed at making the students in the district more successful.
“I’m going to ask questions and I’m going to be an advocate because I understand policy at the local, city and state levels,” Weddington said on how he’ll stand out from other school board candidates.
Asking the tough questions will be one way to get the district’s finances back on track, an issue Weddington feels needs much attention.
