Betty Drummond has made education her business for most of her adult life. A former teacher, she worked in the Columbus City Schools for more than 20 years, most of which were spent teaching the third grade. After teaching for 22 years, Drummond became a reading specialist overseeing 26 elementary schools.
After working in the Columbus City Schools, she became an administrator with the Ohio Department of Education. Her extensive background in education is what Drummond feels makes her a qualified candidate for the Board of Education.
“Because of that background, I feel I know how children will learn,” she told the Columbus Post. “That’s what I bring to the board table.”
Drummond was elected to the Columbus Board of Education in 2001 where she has served as the chairperson for the Academic Achievement Committee and as a liaison on the Curriculum Quality Control Council.
Drummond points to her successes of her first term, which included what she called her ABC platform which stands for Academic standards, Better assessment and Community involvement. Her efforts to increase academic standards include after-school tutoring, credit recovery, single-gender classrooms and virtual high schools. She strongly supports Superintendent Dr. Gene Harris’ goal of a 90 percent graduation rate by 2012.
