Increased home heating assistance on way

State Senator Ray Miller (D-Columbus) responded to Governor Taft’s Oct. 11 announcement to use $75 million of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds for home heating assistance for low-income Ohioans.
According to the Governor’s office, the new home heating assistance program implementations will benefit an additional 70,000 households than the 330,000 served in 2004 under Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
“I am pleased that the Governor has taken action on my recommendation. Low-income individuals were crying out for help and now they have a program to get some needed assistance,” Miller said.
In early October, Miller introduced Senate Bill 192, which appropriated $100 million of the unobligated funds in TANF to go towards home heating assistance. Under Miller’s proposal, a recipient’s gross household income could not exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level or $37,700 for a family of four.
